Audi board member Peter Schwarzenbauer has confirmed that the German automaker will build its own electric car. We will offer a pure electric car, Schwarzenbauer told Autocar, but added the small electric Audi will not be based on the A1. A likely electric candidate is the VW Up! which could be renamed the Lupo and hit the roads in 2011.
Audi has unofficially said it will sell an electric version of the VW Up (pictured, right) as soon as it becomes available, with the earliest estimate being late 2010.
But so far, it is not even clear yet whether the groups new low-cost economy car will be rear- or front-engined; the concept had the engine slung at the back, but the latest news is that production versions will adopt a more conventional layout.
