Audi e-tron -- an all-wheel-drive, all-electric

 

The packaging is the car's amazing looks and gimmicks -- from wind scoops that automatically open when the car needs cooling, sensor-activated door handles and the high-tech headlights. The gift is its performance -- zero to 60 miles per hour in less than 4.7 seconds and a torque curve that never seems to let up. Here's how we know: Wave your hand under the crease in the door and the door handle magically appears. No rear-view mirrors either -- just rear-view cameras. All the lights are LEDs. The high beams dim only in the area where it detects oncoming cars. Instead of fog lamps, the low beams are automatically widened to prevent glare. E-tron weighs about 3,500 pounds, of which about 1,000 pounds is the battery tucked behind the two seats. The car is supposed to get about 148 miles of driving per charge, and it takes about six to eight hours to charge with a European 230-volt outlet.
