Robert Stempel, the former chairman of General Motors, has been called the father of the General Motors EV-1 electric car. Hes committed to promoting electric-drive cars hybrids or pure plug-ins and to powering them in an emissions-free way. He is a partner in Ovshinsky Solar with Stan Ovshinsky. The company is testing a thin-film, amorphous-silicon technology that will be far less-expensive to make than crystalline-silicon panels. The company is working on a manufacturing process that deposits a very thin film of amorphous silicon onto huge rolls of thin stainless-steel sheet, allowing photovoltaic panels to be made, not by the square foot, but by the mile, possibly reducing overall costs to near those of fossil-fuel generation. Mr. Stempel is a also member of the Electric Drive Transportation Association, a group advocating for the adoption of electric drive technologies. He is not fixated on any particular type of electrically driven car design he likes them all. The

Saving the world might not be as tough as it looks. In this weekends Automobiles section, I investigate what its like to drive a Toyota Prius converted to plug-in-hybrid status, a 10 kilowatt-hour, lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack hidden under its trunk carpet. The converted 2005 Prius, created by Plug-In Solutions of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., is geared to run in all-electric mode up to 52 m.p.h., as far as 50 miles. Or the battery pack can be used to augment the existing Prius nickel-metal-hydride battery, increasing mileage to a claimed 100 m.p.g. It would be cheating to run a plug-in on carbon-based oil-, coal- or natural-gas-generated electricity. So we recharged it every day from the Ford familys 6kW, 36-panel solar array, soaking up radiation from the nearest star and turning it directly into fresh, homegrown trips to middle school. You could do it, too. Solar-panel prices are dropping fast. Our system, installed today, would cost about 25 percent less than it d
