Rumors spread quickly about the 2013 Fiat doing 500 mules during testing while wearing near-production bodywork. Not bad for a little pony! Fiat showed off a concept version two years prior to the release and we weren't disappointed. The battery-powered 500 continues the line for the gas version which was not a big seller in the U.S.
Car and driver: Chrysler is largely responsible for the development of the 500E's electric running gear, which is being installed in the small Fiat rather than, say, a Dodge Dart because of the car s low weight and tidy packaging. A lithium-ion battery pack, now basically the industry standard for full-on EVs, powers a 100-hp electric motor that drives the 500E s front wheels. We were very happy to see Fiat pop up on the EV radar being they were looking like one of the manufacturers that would end up in the "extinct column".
